Harlem Globetrotters Show Review: Honda Center Globetrotters Game

Our contributor writer Jody Leighty just welcomed a baby boy to their family. Congrats Jody!! She wrote about the Family Pet Expo last year. And we’re glad she got to spend time with her eldest at a Harlem Globetrotters game last week and shared her experience below.

Harlem Globetrotters Show Review
Since giving birth, me and big brother was in need of some much needed one–on-one Mommy and Daddy time. So, while baby brother stayed home with Grandma, the three of us headed out to the Honda Center to enjoy a Harlem Globetrotters game.

We arrived about 30 minutes before the Harlem Globetrotters game started and the crowd was greeted and steadily entertained by the Master of Ceremonies. He got the crowd pumped up and played some hilarious interactive games with the volunteers he plucked out of the crowd (which I was happy to not be picked for because it involved dancing in front of the entire arena!).

There were also professional dancers doing flips, spins, and other cool moves that my 3 year old loved! The Harlem Globetrotters mascot, “Big G” (his head is a giant globe) was very amusing with his dancing, pranks and silly antics.
Harlem Globetrotter Review
This particular Harlem Globetrotters game at the Honda Center was epic because the Globetrotters played the Washington Generals –back in 1971. The Generals ended their 2,495-game losing streak by beating the Harlem Globetrotters. The Globetrotters were more determined than ever to beat the team who stole this victory from them almost 45 years ago.
Before the game, there was a historical video played with highlights from that 1971 loss. Although the Generals seemed pumped up and ready to defeat the Globetrotters once more, the Globetrotters did not seemed pleased. They showed an entertaining confidence from the start of warm ups through the entire game.

Throughout the game, there were many exciting skits involving various players, coaches, referees, and even lucky fans. One that received the most noise from the crowd was a controversial call that was followed by a live replay in slow motion using a beach ball instead of a basketball. The players are not only extremely talented in their magical ball-handling skills, they are comedians too!
With only seconds left, the Master of Ceremonies revealed the referee making terrible calls against the Globetrotters the entire game was indeed a player on the Generals in the 1971 defeat of the Globetrotters. He was ejected from the game, but not before a call gave the Generals 5 points to tie the game, sending it to sudden death overtime. It wasn’t until then that the Globetrotters were able to score the last basket and win the game!

Just as we expected, the Harlem Globetrotters put on a great family friendly show that provided us first-timers a great memory to keep forever!
