Driving to Joshua Tree felt like opening a Dr. Suess book. The trees looked whimsical and they are aplenty – scattered all over Joshua Tree, CA. I could only imagine what it would be like standing inside Joshua Tree National Park except our impromptu trip to Joshua Tree was to try Pie for the People – known for their pizza pies. But the park is actually a mere 10 minutes away from this pizza joint if you want to visit both.
Not knowing what to expect – we waited an hour for our pizza on top of the 15 minute wait to order our pizza as there was a line. It wasn’t even lunch nor dinner time when we went. Had we known, we would have ordered ahead over the phone.
Was the wait worth it? We ordered the David Bowie pizza which is white sauce base with mozzarella, bacon, roasted pineapple, jalapeños, Guinness, caramelized onion and topped with plum sauce when cut. I thought it was delicious! The plum sauce addition I’m only familiar with as accompaniment to roasted duck created a nice sweet contrast to the jalapeños.
My only complaint, yet big, was that the crust was too chewy. It was thin crust yet it gave my jaw a workout, contrary to other reviews who said their crust was great. Was there something wrong with the dough they made that day? I’m not sure. Even their plain ol’ cheese pizza was good if not for the crust.
Would I visit the place again? If we luckily end up going to Joshua Tree National Park in the near future maybe we’ll pass by it again. Simply to try their other topping combinations and their salads which everyone was actually ordering when we were there.
There is an outdoor area to enjoy your pizza al fresco besides eating it in, artworks for sale inside and a nice custom stained glass inside the restroom.
You can also order to go or order by the slice if it’s available.
We drove to Joshua Tree National Park after trying the pizza at Pie for the People but traffic was at a standstill when we were already close by. We decided to head back home as the kids were already tired after a whole day of traveling and hope to visit again another time.
Pie for the People is located at 61740 Twentynine Palms Highway, Joshua Tree, CA 92252. It’s a 30 minute drive from the freeway adjacent to Palm Springs.
