My favorite holiday season is right around the corner. We’ve already put up our Christmas tree and holiday songs are already playing throughout the day. And for the first time, I may be ahead this year in taking holiday pictures of the kids.
How about you guys? Have you taken holiday pictures of the kids yet? To help you get started, I’m giving away a $50 gift card to OshKosh B’Gosh so you can start shopping for what to make your kids wear for their photography session. Also check out my 5 Tips on Taking Holiday Pictures of your Kids below.
1. DECIDE WHAT TO WEAR
It’s so important that the kids feel comfortable in what they are wearing especially during a photography session so pick a style your kids will like. For our girls, it’s dresses and tutus. But during our trip to OshKosh B’Gosh, we saw these cute denim with sparkling suspenders that the kids liked so we ended up getting them on top of the usual styles they like and it came out looking really great on them.
2. TAKE IT OUTDOORS
Unless you’re a professional photographer and have strobe lights at home, your best lighting is the sun. So take the photography session outside preferably during the golden hours – around one hour before sun down and one hour after sunrise. That’s when the light is at its softest and rich in colors. Midday will create harsh shadows.
Just make sure to dress the kids appropriately to match the weather. Living in Southern California, we can get away with long sleeves and pants during this time of the year, at least in the daytime.
3. INCLUDE A HOLIDAY TRADITION
The best way to feature and capture the memories is making a Holiday Family Tradition part of your photos. Whether it’s baking cookies for Santa, putting up the tree, etc. For our family, it’s putting up the Christmas Tree. I used the OshKosh B’Gosh tutu for that added sparkle.
4. TIMING IS EVERYTHING
Don’t force your kids into a photography session because you need to already send out those holiday cards. Make sure the lil ones had their naps already or is not hungry. When they are in a good mood, they’ll put on those new clothes you bought and put on a great smile. I didn’t even have to tell them how to pose. They were camera ready and I just click away. It was a mix of goofing around and posing for me.
5. SET INDIVIDUAL AND/OR GROUP PHOTOS
Kids grow up so fast. You’d want to take as many photos of them as much as you can while they are growing up. But you may think of just doing photos of them together, it’s also actually nice to highlight their individuality by setting separate sessions for them if time permits.
What do you think of the kids style and their photos? Loving it? To achieve the same look for your photography session with the kids. Get the following from OshKosh B’Gosh.
