Show Review: Yo Gabba Gabba Live at Nokia Theatre

Our toddler is a big fan of Yo Gabba Gabba. She’s seen all the episodes that are on Netflix. My hubby and I can even sing along to the songs when we hear them, which we did when we watched the Yo Gabba Gabba Live Concert at the Nokia Theatre in LA Live, Downtown Los Angeles.

The show was at 2 PM, and you would think a lot of kids her age would be on nap time. However, when we got there, there were kids left and right, some even dressed in Yo Gabba Gabba outfits (including the parents), and others were buying Yo Gabba Gabba merchandise. The chaos was both exciting and confusing.

It was our first time watching a show at the Nokia Theatre, so we were not familiar with the seating arrangement. Unfortunately, the ushers also led us astray, adding to the challenge. It was quite a lot of walking, especially while carrying a toddler with us.

We were delighted to discover that our seats had significantly more legroom compared to the others. To our relief, the show started right on time, with large screens on both sides enhancing the experience.

DJ Lance came out, and the screaming began. It felt like being at a Beyoncé concert, except more than half of the audience consisted of kids.

My daughter was completely quiet, perhaps in disbelief that the Yo Gabba Gabba characters were real.

The singing and dancing began after DJ Lance introduced the Yo Gabba Gabba characters: Muno, Plex, Brobee, Foofa, and Toodee. My daughter gradually warmed up and started getting into the groove, letting out her silliness.

There weren’t many physical props in the show, except for one part when they played hide and seek. The rest of the elements were displayed on a big screen as part of the background.

The show lasted for an hour, during which the Yo Gabba Gabba characters took breaks intermittently, sometimes accompanied by special guests.

They performed almost all of the famous songs from the show, including “Party in My Tummy” and many more.

When we were buying our Yo Gabba Gabba tickets, Ticketmaster didn’t allow us to choose our specific seat; you just select a general area, and it assigns your seat for you. Unfortunately, we ended up at the very far end with many other people, while many rows in front of us were left empty. Go figure.

But since the Nokia Theatre isn’t as large as the Staples Center, and the mascots were sizable, everything was quite clear from our seats.

Biz Markie was one of the guests of the show, and there was a lot of screaming when he came out. Some lucky kids, probably those with VIP tickets, even got to go up on stage and imitate him.

It was truly an enjoyable show. They’re still touring in other cities, and I highly recommend watching it if your child enjoys the show on TV and knows the songs. After grabbing our $4 cotton candy, we headed home for a well-deserved nap.
